Sunscreen & Avoiding “Makeup Meltdown”

Sunscreen & Avoiding “Makeup Meltdown”

Here’s a double dose from the dailyglow.com since I have missed a few Mondays…I know SLACKER!!! I thought these two issues where SO relevant to us right now that I though I would share them first. Enjoy!

Have you ever stood in the sunscreen aisle at your local drugstore, staring at the shelves full of tubes and bottles until your eyes glazed over? Help may be on the way. This month, for the first time in 33 years, the FDA released new guidelines that are designed to simplify the confusing and often misleading labels on sunscreens. Most manufacturers have a year to comply, so it should be easier to pick one next summer. Here’s the lowdown:

  • The word “sunblock” will no longer be allowed on labels, since this implies that the product blocks out all UV rays.
  • Only sunscreens that protect equally against UVA (aging) rays and UVB (burning) rays can be labeled “broad spectrum.”
  • Sunscreens with SPF of 15 or higher can claim that they prevent sunburn, sun damage, and skin cancer. Sunscreens with SPF less than 15 will be required to carry a warning that they haven’t been shown to prevent skin cancer or aging.
  • Sunscreens will not be able to call themselves waterproof or sweatproof. This is because no sunscreen can be completely budge-proof under water. They can be labeled as water-resistant; if so, they’ll need to indicate how long (40 or 80 minutes) you can swim or sweat before the protection wears off.
  • In addition, the FDA is proposing a maximum SPF of 50. Sunscreens that have SPF values higher than 50 would be labeled as SPF 50+. This is because there’s no scientific proof that a higher SPF provides more protection from skin cancer and aging compared to products with SPF 50. The agency is also taking a closer look at sunscreen sprays to evaluate how well they protect, as well as the safety of inhaling the mist.

While these guidelines are a step in the right direction, the labeling is still not as informative and helpful as labels in Europe and Asia, which have rating systems that help sunscreen users compare the degree of UVA protection between products. The FDA should also take a closer look at the safety of current sunscreen ingredients, and speed up their review and approval of newer ingredients with better UVA protection as well as less irritation and potential toxicity.
For more information on the change in sunscreen labeling, visit the American Academy of Dermatology.

Here is how to avoid a “makeup meltdown” =):

Q: I want to schedule more sessions with the cute new trainer at my gym, but I need to figure out how to keep my makeup from dripping all over my face during the workout. How do I pull off a polished look while exercising?

A: Dripping makeup is messy, and it can be a real turnoff — even at the gym. But don’t sweat it! Here are some tips that’ll help you avoid makeup melt and show off your natural glow instead:

  1. Wear less makeup. The gym is one place where you can get away with this, so go for it. Instead of full foundation, just dab on a little concealer wherever you need it.
  2. If you need more coverage, add some tinted moisturizer to help even out your complexion. For oily or acne-prone skin, try Neutrogena’s Healthy Skin Enhancer, which is oil free and noncomedogenic. Bobbi Brown’s Tinted Moisturizing Balm works well for dry skin. (Or mix some of your usual foundation with a bit of moisturizer to make your own.)
  3. Skip the blush — your workout will give you a natural glow.
  4. Use waterproof liner and mascara to avoid raccoon eyes. For a clean, natural look, I like Maybelline Unstoppable Smudgeproof Waterproof Eyeliner and L’Oréal’s Panoramic Curl Waterproof Mascara because they add definition and won’t run down your face.
  5. Use a tinted lip balm instead of lipstick, and skip the lip liner so you don’t end up with an odd-looking outline around your mouth by the end of your workout. And no goopy gloss, either — it’ll just get all over your teeth and water bottle.

       6.   Carry a towel for blotting the sweat from your face — pat, don’t wipe!

Makeup For Eye Glass Wearers

So here is a tutorial for all of those ladies that are eye glass wearers. Not much different than normal as far as technique bt there are for SURE a few tips and tricks to help with opening up the eyes and concealer issues. I have another tutorial already in mind for when daytime turns to evening and you want to be more dramatic. Tell me though, do you wear contacts for special evenings or do you all still wear glasses no matter what?

May Favorites

May Favorites

Yeah, I’m a slacker but it’s summer and me and my boys are LOVING our time together!!! How is your summer going? What plans do you have and what are you enjoying? Here are some products that other readers are loving.
Kelby says: My favorite product this month is Laura Geller Long Lasting Color Brow Marker Duo. It is truly easy to apply, just like a marker, but matches my hair color perfectly (I got the Taupe). It’s fool proof, comes off easier than any other of my products (even with just my face wash!!). I recommend this to anyone who can’t leave the house without doing their eyebrows!

Nancy gives us her favs:I’m nearly 52 years old and I’ve always had a huge interest in beauty products. Over the years I’ve seen products come and go. And because I’ve always been on the hunt for the best product to make me look my best, I’ve tried quite a few. I don’t regularly shop the cosmetics counters at the dept. stores because I feel that one can look good with less expensive products purchased at Target or a drugstore. That doesn’t mean I haven’t tried some. Lancome has been a fave foundation in the past as well as Clinique’s eye shadows and Estee’s aero matte translucent face powder. But recently I’ve discovered some products that have made me look the best I’ve looked in a long time (in my opinion!) They are:

Oil of Olay’s Regenerist night resurfacing elixer,
L’Oreal’s Magic Smooth Souffle foundation and
 L’Oreal’s HIP eyeliner in black.
My skin has never looked so youthful and dewey without looking greasy. I don’t know if it’s the Olay elixer or the L’Oreal foundation…or a combination of the two. Whatever, I’m satisfied! As for the eyeliner, I really prefer a pencil as I seem to be able to use them the best (I sorta have all thumbs). This HIP eyeliner applies so smoothly. And it stays on for hours.
I wanted to share my 3 fave products. I don’t know if my standards have lowered or these are really good products because I never endorse a product to anyone. Generally, if I like a product okay, I change my mind after a few weeks of using it. But not these! I really love them.
K ladies, my turn!!! Here is my first love of June =):
LOVE this swimsuit!!!!! SO worth it the money and since this is the first month of pure sun here it is on my May favs list!!! The video has the rest =).
Sucker Punch Babydoll Tutorial

Sucker Punch Babydoll Tutorial

I have gotten quite a few requests for this look and it was about time to do it. I haven’t seen the movie but I hear it is visually stunning and worth it. Have you seen it? Was it any good? Well, this little chica was the most understated as far as makeup was concerned out of all of them. I remember her from A Series Of Unfortunate Events and RARELY do I think that someone who has dark hair naturally looks better blond. Gwen Stefani is one and now this girl is another. I LOVE it!!! I am for sure a fan of the glowing skin and the pink cheeks. Overall, one of my fav looks and I might just do the hair thing again = D. Enjoy!!!

Hot Smokey Summer Eye

Hot Smokey Summer Eye

Turn up the heat with this smoldery eye! I haven’t been feeling all that great this past week but inspiration struck and now I give you the silent movie era of makeup tutorials =). The music makes me want to do a 1920’s flapper look…and I think I just might!!! My fav part is that it took my husband this long to show me how to speed up videos and change transitions. I feel like I am BURSTING with new ideas now!!! This video normally would have been 8 min long but since I sped it up to match the theme it’s HALF that! Also, I hold up a brown shadow toward the beginning and don’t tell you the name is Embark from MAC.
Well, I am off to bed for more sleep. I need it since my son’s birthday party is coming up and I want to kick this sickness to the CuRb! Get this, he asked for a Halloween Birthday Bash in June =). I am beYOND excited since that is one of my FAVORITE holidays. Can I share the invites with you?

We made a mold of his finger, roughed it up, tied a reminder ribbon around it and laid it on a soft bed of reindeer moss. I was DYING when I saw how cute and little his fingers were =). Thank you Martha!!!

So It’s Not Monday

So It’s Not Monday

I saw this and thought…yes, this is true. I will pass this onto my ladies with all my love and support LOL. Yeah, I’m a nerd but you knew that ;). Here is what thedailyglow.com had to say about hiring a pro to handle your face on your special day:

Even if you’re not a celebrity, there are certain occasions when you want to look your absolute best. Whether you’re splurging for your wedding or a class reunion, you want a professional image for your new Web site, or you just want a sexy photo for an online dating profile, hiring a professional makeup artist can be totally worth it. I learned my lesson years ago when I did my own makeup for a television interview. I ended up looking so pale and sickly that my mother called and asked if I was ill! Now whenever I do a TV appearance or need to have photos taken, I have my makeup done professionally.

To find a makeup artist, ask for referrals from friends who have been pleased with their makeup. Hairstylists and wedding or event photographers are also likely to know who does good work.
When you contact the makeup artist, ask about his or her professional experience, what type of work she or he does, and what rate you can expect. Ask to see photos of the artist’s work or speak to recent clients.
Depending on the type of event you’re getting primped for, you may have other questions: Is the makeup artist available to work on other members of a wedding party? Will she or he stick around for touch-ups at a photo shoot or TV interview? If so, be sure to ask about additional costs.
Always do a trial run. You’d never wait until the day of a big event to put your dress on for the first time, would you? A trial run will help you and your makeup artist nail down the right look and prevent any ghastly surprises.

SO Stinking CUTE!!!!!

SO Stinking CUTE!!!!!

Do you browse the web? Do you sometimes start at a baking blog with the purpose of grabbing a quick recipe only to find yourself, after browsing her fav sites, then that girl’s fav sites, at a sewing blog (I don’t sew) that is making the CuTeSt accessory bags EVER??? You may have gathered already that this indeed happened to me and I am SO glad! Meet Anngela from Anngela’s Pretty Little Things. This girl can do it all! She is super crafty and a great seamstress. I drool over any images for Halloween and whadda ya know she’s got that too =). Here she shares a brush roll up case that she made at a recent party. Take it away Anngela!!!
The task at hand for this party–a roll-up accessories case! After a few snacks and conversation, we got to sewing. House Party supplied the directions, fabric and thread as well as some freebies while Katie hosted and gave step-by-step directions. Here are a few photos from Sew Woodsy’s house party re-cap post.
I’m diligently sewing my pockets 🙂

Vanessa and I getting our sew on

The roll-up accessory case was meant to be a fairly simple project–and that it was! This is a PERFECT project for any beginner sewer. I planned to use mine for my make-up brushes but the versatility and customizations for this project are endless. This has been a project on my “craft to do” list for quite some time–so this allowed for one more project to be checked off as complete!

:Supplies:
Two pieces of fabric
(we used 12″x14″ but you can use any rectangular size–
step 3 explains how you may want to determine your size)
Coordinating Ribbon (approximately 20″-24″ in length; longer if you make a larger case)
Sewing basics (machine, thread, pins, iron, etc.)
Step 1. Pin your fabric right sides facing together along the edges. Sew along the edge of the fabric with a small seam allowance. Be sure to leave a 4″ gap in the center of one of your your longest edges for turning.
Step 2. Turn the fabric right side out, poke out corners and press.

Step 3. To make the pocket: Lay your fabric so that the long side that has the 4″ opening is on the right. Decide how “long” of pockets you want and fold your rectangle from the bottom up. The folded part will be your pocket. Press your fold.

The long white line is where the top of my pocket is folded to–a little less than half-way up

Step 4. Open your fold and topstich the top of your pocket for a finished look. (Be sure to not stitch your pocket to the case–this is just a decorative step)
Step 5. Re-fold your flap. Now it’s time to sew your individual pocket channels: Determine the channel widths depending on what you’re going to hold in your case. I did mine a variety of 1/2″-2″ inch pockets for my various sized make-up brushes. Use either a straight stitch or a decorative stitch to give it flair! You may sew only to the top of the pocket, or you may sew up the entire case–I chose to stop at the top of the pocket. Sew your channels by starting at the bottom of the pocket and working towards the top edge, reinforcing at the beginning and end or your stitch. (see photo below) *Do not sew shut your end pockets*

Notice end pocket is not sewn shut

Step 6. Final step! Fold your ribbin in half and insert the folded end into the 4″ opening. This should be directly to the right of your pocket. (see photo below)

Stitch around your entire perimeter of your case–closing the gap and securing the open pocket ends–and you’re done!
